VIDOSH SAFETY AND HEALTH CONSULTATION REQUEST FORM

    VIDOSH CONSULTATION SERVICES

The primary objective of the VIDOSH Consultation Program is to help employers recognize and control potential safety and health hazards in the workplace. Consultative surveys usually consist of on-site safety and health surveys, although the Program also offers assistance in other areas such as trainings. Employers can request a comprehensive (wall-to-wall) safety and health survey or may limit the survey to specific areas of concern.

Since this service is voluntary, you must request a consultation visit. Requests for full-service or limited-service health or safety visits are made via the Consultation Service Request Form below. You may also request training/seminars or written program assistance. These are courtesy visits and there is no charge to the employer. Consultation services are free to Government of the Virgin Islands Departments and Agencies. On-site consultation services are funded through the Virgin Islands Division of Occupational Safety and Health (VIDOSH) and Region II Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The Consultation Program prioritizes each request received according to the hazards and schedules on-site inspections accordingly.

Consultation Assistance is provided by the VIDOSH Consultation personnel who are experienced and highly trained safety and industrial hygiene professionals.  Our trained consultants work with employers to:

    • Help recognize hazards in your workplace
    • Suggest general approaches and/or options for solving a safety and health issue
    • Find and fix workplace hazards
    • Give advice for complying with OSHA standards
    • Help establish and improve safety and health programs and train workers

Consultation services are separate and apart from VIDOSH enforcement, so these services do not result in penalties or citations.

VIDOSH Safety and Health Consultation Benefits

    • VIDOSH Consultation services are provided at no cost to the employer
    • All information provided about the Department/Agency and any unsafe or unhealthful conditions the consultant uncovers is confidential and is not reported routinely to VIDOSH inspection/enforcement
    • Limit or reduce the burden of worker's compensation and liability insurance programs
    • Improve worker productivity with reduced employee days off from work due to injuries or illnesses.
    • Avoid potential expensive OSHA citations and penalties

Worker safety is essential to running a successful department. VIDOSH’s consultant can help the Department/Agency ask and think through essential questions to create a safe work environment. Departments/Agencies may not have the budget to hire a safety professional, but this program can offer similar advice at no cost.

Even if your Department/Agency has not had any work-related injuries or fatalities, evaluating your workplace for safety hazards is important. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of worker injuries or illnesses from occurring now and in the future.

     What Is a Consultation Visit?

An On-Site Consultation visit is a confidential, no-cost consultation with a safety and health professional who will help you find and fix hazards, develop safety and health programs, and train your workers. Your department's only obligation is to correct unsafe or unhealthy working conditions within a reasonable time-period.

    How It Works

Complete the online VIDOSH Consultation Request Form, let us know the safety concerns you have, and a consultation visit will be scheduled. The consultant will help you identify the department’s safety and health needs and set a date for the visit that is convenient for you.

    Walk-through

The consultant will study either specific operations you designate or the entire workplace and discuss the applicable OSHA standards. Together, the employer, worker representative, and consultant walk through the business and look for existing and potential hazards. OSHA strongly encourages maximum employee participation in the walk-through. Talking with employees, and all stakeholders during the walk-through helps the consultant identify and judge the nature and extent of specific hazards. The consultant can review your safety and health management program at no cost to you.

    Closing Conference and Follow-up

The consultant will review their findings in detail with you and the worker representative in a closing conference. You will learn what improvements are needed, as well as what you are doing right, cost considerations, and how to keep making progress. After the consultant leaves, you will receive a detailed written report summarizing the visit and confirming what needs to be fixed.

    Correcting Hazards

When a situation is determined as a “serious” hazard, the consultant will help you develop a plan to correct the hazard within a reasonable period and protect your workers in the meantime

  • CONSULTATION SCOPE

Full-Service: Full-service consultation requests provide a safety and/or health hazard assessment of all working conditions, equipment, and processes at the end worksite, as well as a review of the employer’s safety and health programs and workplace injury and illness data.

Limited-Service: Limited-service consultation requests prove a less comprehensive safety and/or health assessment than a full-service request. For example, a limited-service consultation may focus on a specific items or area(s) of concern, areas at the worksite as well as a review of the employer’s safety and health programs and workplace injury and illness data. Limited Service is solely limited to the items or areas of concern that the employer requests.

VIDOSH WILL DETERMINE THE SCOPE OF YOUR VISIT DEPENDING ON SERVICES REQUESTED.
